Amazon is planning to introduce a marketplace that would allow publishers to sell their content to companies developing artificial intelligence products, according to a report by The Information on Monday.
The report said Amazon has informed publishing industry executives about the initiative ahead of an Amazon Web Services (AWS) conference scheduled for Tuesday. AWS has reportedly circulated presentation slides referencing the proposed content marketplace, citing two individuals familiar with discussions about the project.
According to the report, the slides place the marketplace alongside AWS’s core artificial intelligence tools, including Bedrock and Quick Suite, highlighting potential services publishers could use to distribute and monetise their content.
The development comes at a time when publishers and AI firms are increasingly negotiating terms governing the use of online content. Key disputes centre on whether such content can be used to train AI models or generate responses for users, with publishers pushing for usage-based payment models that increase fees as content usage grows.
Responding to the report, an Amazon spokesperson said the company had “nothing specific to share,” but emphasised that Amazon maintains long-standing relationships with publishers and continues to pursue innovation in the sector.
The move also follows a similar initiative by Microsoft. Last week, the technology company announced it is working on a Publisher Content Marketplace, described as an AI licensing hub designed to display content usage terms set by publishers.
